Corita Kent Collective Benefit Cabaret
Sunday, April 26  from  2:00pm–3:00pm
Stratford Heights, Building 16 - Room 201
The Corita Kent Collective is the final project of my Independent Study in solo-producing limited engagement theatre and cabaret events.  This hour-long benefit cabaret event features young artists of the Cincinnati area sharing songs, scenes, poetry, and more.  Admission is free!  In lieu of an admission fee, an optional donation to La Soupe, a Cincinnati-based charity organization, is encouraged.

My mission is to provide a space for my friends and peers to perform pieces of theatre that they aren't often given the time or space to share with an audience, while offering support to those in our community through a charity organization that is already creating tangible change for our neighbors every day.

FAQs

Who was Corita Kent?  And why name it after her?

Corita Kent, born Frances Elizabeth Kent, (1918-1986) was one of the most influential voices in the pop art movement of the 1960’s, known for her commitment to addressing social injustice in her preferred medium – serigraphy.

She belonged to the religious order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, taking the name Sister Mary Corita, and teaching art at the Immaculate Heart College.  Though she stopped teaching in the late 1960’s after leaving the order, her Ten Rules for Artists, penned in collaboration with her students at the College, have continued to be a source of counsel for countless young artists, even to this day.

Her work was democratic. Serigraphy and watercolor have fewer barriers to entry than many other visual artforms, is cost-effective, and serigraphy especially is easier to reproduce. Her art was meant to be viewed on the street by her neighbors, never intended to be put in a museum.

Her joy and humility, and her activity in social justice even until her death in 1986 after a quiet battle with cancer, have cemented her as a model for young artists.  So, in her honor, the Corita Kent Collective strives to program cost-effective events featuring socially responsive work, new and old, to support those in our own community.

Where will my donation go and whom does my gift benefit?

La Soupe is a Cincinnati-based charity organization that bridges the gap between food waste and hunger by transforming surplus ingredients into nutritious meals for those in need through the power of chefs.

Each week, they rescue an average of 30,000 pounds of fresh food from local grocers, farms, manufacturers, and distributors.  Their chefs transform these ingredients into restaurant-quality soupes and meals, which are shared with community partners who feed our neighbors facing food insecurity.

100% of the funds raised on April 26th will be donated to La Soupe.
